About these notes

BIM Automation Field Notes is a practical knowledge base for documenting BIM workflows, automation tools, technical solutions and lessons learned from real project experience. The goal is to make technical knowledge easier to understand, apply and share.

Testing status: Some procedures reflect a reference Windows setup and may need adjustment depending on software versions and workstation configuration. Validate steps in a test environment before applying them to live project models.

What has been tested

  • Connecting Claude Desktop to an active Revit model through the Revit MCP integration and retrieving model information.
  • Searching a Revit view for tags containing “STR”: one test identified six matching tags out of 109 and returned tag text and associated IDs.
  • Using the MCP integration to assist with an FCU family update, saving the family and loading it into a Revit model.

These demonstrations do not mean every planned tool is available or reliable for every model. Review generated results and model changes before using them in project deliverables.

Objectives

  • Make setup easier to follow with step-by-step instructions.
  • Reduce troubleshooting time by recording common errors and checks.
  • Explain practical value through real BIM use cases.
  • Improve consistency with repeatable workflows and version details.
  • Support safe adoption by distinguishing tested procedures from assumptions.

Official vendor repositories remain cited as technical references where appropriate; the documentation content itself is reproduced on this website.
