BIM MEP Toolkit
Research & Development (R&D) — Testing in Progress. This toolkit is actively being explored and validated. Some workflows have been demonstrated in specific test scenarios; other features remain planned. It is not yet a production-ready suite. Test on non-critical models, verify all results, and review the status labels before relying on a feature.
Current R&D status
The purpose of this page is to share what is being investigated, distinguish proven tests from future ideas, and invite practical input from Revit users.
- Tested in a specific scenario: demonstrated successfully, but not guaranteed for every model or setup.
- Testing in progress: under active validation; behaviour and workflow may change.
- Planned: proposed capability that is not confirmed as implemented.

Development roadmap — work in progress. The features below describe the current direction of the project; they are not all built or verified yet. Status labels should be updated as implementation and testing progress.
The vision
Less repetitive clicking. Clearer model information. More consistent BIM workflows.
The BIM MEP Toolkit is planned as a collection of organised tools accessible from a dedicated Revit ribbon tab. Each tool should have a clear purpose, explain what it will change, and report what happened so users can review the result.
Planned tool groups
1. Project Setup
Goal: Set up model views and project structure more consistently.
- Create or help organise levels, views, elevations and sections.
- Apply naming rules and view templates where supported.
- Check existing items before creating new ones.
- Summarise what was created, skipped, or needs attention.
Helps with: repetitive setup work and keeping project structures consistent.
2. MEP Modeling
Goal: Assist with recurring mechanical, electrical and plumbing modelling tasks.
- Create or place supported MEP elements from user instructions.
- Assist with repetitive equipment placement and model edits.
- Check routing, elevations and connectors where the API and tool support them.
- Provide a result summary for user review.
Helps with: reducing repetitive modelling steps while keeping the user in control of design decisions.
3. Data & Parameters
Goal: Find and manage model data more efficiently.
- Find missing or inconsistent parameter values.
- Help standardise naming, equipment codes and workset assignments.
- Support bulk updates with clear selection and confirmation.
- Where implemented, support structured import/export workflows.
Helps with: improving model data quality and reducing manual parameter editing.
4. Coordination
Goal: Help users inspect potential coordination issues.
- Retrieve information about selected elements and their locations.
- Flag potential spatial conflicts or clearance concerns where supported.
- Assist with reviewing openings, sleeves or connection requirements.
- Produce issue lists for the BIM team to check.
Helps with: making coordination reviews more focused. Automated findings must be verified against project requirements and the coordinated model.
5. QA/QC
Goal: Check common modelling and information requirements.
- Audit required parameters and naming conventions.
- Flag incomplete or inconsistent information.
- Check supported connectors or system information.
- Generate a checklist or issue report for review.
Helps with: catching common omissions before model sharing or submission.
6. Documentation & Tagging
Goal: Make drawing information easier to inspect and prepare.
- Retrieve and list tags from a view — tag extraction has already been tested successfully.
- Assist with checking annotation coverage and missing information.
- Support sheet, schedule and drawing-preparation tasks as implemented.
- Summarise results in a readable table or report.
Helps with: reducing manual checking of drawing annotations and documentation.
7. Views & Display
Goal: Make model views easier to read and standardise.
- Assist with view filters and visibility settings.
- Help organise colour coding by system or category.
- Apply supported view presentation settings consistently.
- Report which view settings were changed.
Helps with: making specific systems easier to inspect during modelling and coordination.
8. Utilities & Diagnostics
Goal: Provide supporting functions for everyday Revit work.
- Select, inspect and retrieve element properties.
- Display diagnostic information and operation results.
- Help identify configuration issues or failed commands.
- Provide clear feedback when a requested operation is unsupported.
Helps with: troubleshooting, inspecting model content and understanding what a tool actually did.
Development status
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Tested | Successfully demonstrated in a specific test scenario. |
| In development | Implementation or testing is currently underway. |
| Planned | Proposed for a future iteration; not yet confirmed as available. |
At present, the Revit MCP connection, extracting selected tag information from a Revit view, and using MCP to assist with a Revit family update have been tested. These results do not mean every tool group above is already available.
Example intended workflow
A user might ask: “Find all mechanical equipment missing an equipment code and show me the affected elements.” The intended workflow is to retrieve relevant elements, present findings clearly, and let the user review them. If a later version supports editing, it should identify proposed changes and request confirmation where appropriate before changing the model.
Safe-use principles
- Start with read-only checks wherever possible.
- Review the target model, view and element selection before making changes.
- Use a test model or safe copy when trying new modification workflows.
- Check generated geometry, parameters, tags and system connections in Revit.
- Treat AI output as a draft until verified against project standards and design requirements.
- Record Revit version, toolkit version and test result when reporting issues.
Help shape the toolkit
Have a repetitive Revit task, a QA/QC check, or a coordination workflow that could be easier? Visit the Community Ideas & Feedback board to suggest a tool, describe a pain point, or discuss an existing idea. The goal is to collect practical input from BIM and Revit users.
