Free check · Revit 2019 to 2027

Which Revit can open this file?

Someone sent you a model and your Revit refuses it. Check which version saved it, whether your version can open it, and what you can honestly do if it can’t.

  • The file stays on your device
  • .rvt · .rfa · .rte · .rft
  • Any file size

Check a file

Version check · sheet V-101

Nothing is uploaded

Usually the version installed on your computer, or the version your project uses.

Only a small block of information at the start of the file is read: the version and file type. The file’s contents, its saved path and user name are never shown or sent anywhere.

Choose a file to see which Revit versions can open it.

L01What’s possible

Three things people call “downgrading”.

They are very different. Here is where each one stands, based on Autodesk’s documentation and my own tests.

Option A

Check and plan

Available

Find the version and the right next step. That is what this page does.

  • Read correctly from all 674 Autodesk sample files I tested from Revit 2024 and 2025.
  • Recognises selected empty, renamed, incomplete and malformed file conditions. This is not a full model-integrity check.

Option B

Rebuild in the older version

In testing

Read the newer model and recreate it, element by element, in the older Revit. Some information is always lost.

  • In one reported test model, selected elements and data were rebuilt as editable items. This does not establish complete fidelity for other projects.
  • Families kept their data, but their shapes stopped responding to dimension changes.
  • Experimental and unavailable for production use; further validation is needed.

Option C

Save as an older version

Not possible

Revit has no command to save to an older version, and no supported way to add one.

  • Autodesk confirms that Revit cannot save to earlier versions.
  • Renaming the file or changing its version label does not convert the data inside.

L02How it works

What the check reads, and what it doesn’t.

Every Revit file carries a small information block that records the version that saved it. The check reads only that block.

  1. Confirm it is a Revit file

Files without Revit’s structure are rejected, including other files renamed to .rvt.

  2. Cross-check version markers

The check compares two version markers when both are available. Conflicting markers produce an unclear result. A single available marker is reported with a lower-confidence notice.

  3. Check the file is complete

A file that was cut off during download or copying is flagged, so you don’t chase a version problem that is really a broken copy.

  4. Compare with the version you need

You get one of three answers: opens directly, opens and upgrades, or won’t open, with options for each.

Limits
  • Tested on Revit 2024 and 2025 files. Other versions are expected to read the same way, but are not tested yet.
  • A complete, readable file can still contain problems inside the model. Only Revit can open and audit it.
  • It can’t tell which update (for example 2025.4 or 2025.5) saved the file.

L03Questions

Common questions.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The check runs on your device and reads only the information block at the start of the file. Nothing about the file is sent to me or anyone else, and nothing is stored.

Why can’t you just convert it to my version?

Revit stores each version’s data differently and only converts forwards. A real “downgrade” means rebuilding every element in the older version. I am testing that, and parts of it work well, but families lose their parametric behaviour. I won’t offer a conversion that quietly breaks your model.

Other websites say they can convert Revit files down. Do they work?

I haven’t tested them, so I can’t say. Whatever tool you use: keep the original, ask what is preserved and what is lost, and check the result in Revit before you use it on a project. Think carefully before uploading confidential project models to any third-party service.

What should I ask the sender for?

For coordination, an IFC or a Navisworks file usually covers it. You can link IFC into your Revit. If you need to edit the model, the realistic fix is for the team to agree on one Revit version, and to record it in the BIM execution plan.

Can I open a newer model without buying the newer Revit?

To look, yes. Revit can run in viewer mode without a licence, which opens and reviews models but can’t save or export editable data. See Autodesk’s viewer mode article.

Does this work for families and templates?

Yes. .rfa, .rte and .rft files carry the same version information. A newer family can’t be loaded into an older project either, so ask the maker for a version that matches yours.
